About The Song

“No More Cloudy Days” is a soft rock ballad written by Glenn Frey and Jack Tempchin, recorded by the Eagles for their 2007 album Long Road Out of Eden, their first studio album since 1979’s The Long Run. Released on October 30, 2007, by Lost Highway Records, the double album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 711,000 copies in its first week in the US and earning a platinum certification. The song, the sixth track on Disc 1, was not released as a commercial single but gained airplay as a promotional track, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in 2007 and No. 55 on the Country Airplay chart, reflecting its crossover appeal.

The song’s creation began during the Eagles’ 1994 Hell Freezes Over reunion tour. Glenn Frey, seeking new material, collaborated with Tempchin, a longtime friend who co-wrote 1970s Eagles hits like “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” Tempchin played Frey an unfinished demo, initially titled “Cloudy Days,” with a verse and chorus. Frey liked its uplifting tone, reworked the melody, and finalized the lyrics, crafting a message of hope and renewal after emotional hardship. Recorded at The Doghouse in Los Angeles between 2001 and 2007, the track features Frey on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, with Don Henley on harmony vocals, Joe Walsh on electric guitar, and Timothy B. Schmit on bass. Steuart Smith’s mandolin and Al Garth’s violin add a gentle country-folk texture.

Long Road Out of Eden was a significant comeback, recorded over six years amid band tensions and Frey’s insistence on a cohesive project. The album’s release followed the Eagles’ 2003 single “Hole in the World,” their response to 9/11, and reflected their shift to a more independent distribution model after leaving Warner Bros. “No More Cloudy Days” stood out for its optimistic simplicity, contrasting the album’s broader social critiques in tracks like “Frail Grasp on the Big Picture.” The song’s video, directed by Eric Byler, was filmed in Hawaii, showing Frey walking a beach, symbolizing personal healing, and debuted on the album’s deluxe DVD edition.

The track resonated with fans, often performed live during the Eagles’ 2008–2011 world tour, including a notable 2008 show at London’s O2 Arena. Its lyrics, promising brighter days, connected with audiences navigating post-9/11 uncertainties or personal struggles. While the Eagles didn’t pursue Grammy nominations for the song, the album won a 2008 Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group for “How Long.” Covers are scarce, but the song remains a fan favorite, praised on platforms like Songfacts for its “beautiful melody” and Frey’s sincere delivery. Tempchin later performed it solo, emphasizing its folk roots.

Lyric

Sitting by a foggy window
Staring at the pouring rain
Falling down like lonely teardrops
Memories of love in vain
These cloudy days, make you wanna cry
It breaks your heart when someone leaves and you don’t know why

I can see that you’ve been hurting, baby I’ve been there awhile
Hurt so bad for so long, you can’t remember how to smile
These cloudy days, they bring you down
Put a shadow on your soul when there’s no one else around

But I’ll be right here for you, baby I’ll see you through
No more cloudy days
No more stormy nights
No more rainy days
Everything’s gonna be alright

There’s a better day a-coming, you don’t have to be afraid
Sun is gonna shine upon you, chase those cloudy days away
These cloudy days, they’re gonna fade
And you’re gonna rise up singing in the morning, it’s gonna be okay

I’ll be right here for you, baby I’ll see you through
No more cloudy days
No more stormy nights
No more rainy days
Everything’s gonna be alright

No more cloudy days
No more stormy nights
No more rainy days
Everything’s gonna be alright
