About The Song

Do you remember when theĀ King of Rock & RollĀ and theĀ Queen of PopĀ performed a duet on theĀ American IdolĀ stage in 2007? Yes, it did happen. The lateĀ Elvis PresleyĀ andĀ Celine DionĀ sang Presleyā€™s 1968 hit, ā€œIf I Can Dream.ā€Ā (Interestingly, Dion was born in 1968.)

It is one of the few duets in history that utilized technology. It was a technological feat that allowed Canadian diva Celine Dion to have a duet with the late Elvis Presley.Ā Many fans were amazed while others freaked out. It was a night of wonder and speculation.

Reaction from the viewers and couch critics was mixed. Many weighed in on the unusual televised duet, which showed a statuesque Dion and a realistic-looking Presley. Their voices harmonized together on stage while singing the 1968 hit.

BloggerĀ Lady StarbladeĀ wrote,

ā€œThat Elvis/Celine thing was too creepy. I had to leave the room, it freaked me out that bad.ā€

Meanwhile, other spectators invented a new word just to describe the performance, especially Presleyā€™s image: ā€œcreeptastic.ā€

On the other hand, others were mesmerized. 32-year-old Maddie from Alabama wrote on her blog,

ā€œMy body became one entire chill bump.Ā It was the most magnificent thing Iā€™ve ever seen in my life.ā€

After the unusual duet between the two stars, questions were raised and speculations were sought.Ā How did they do it?

Hologram expertĀ Steve WilsonĀ from London explained,

ā€œ(Presleyā€™s) been edited on there and Iā€™ll very, very much guess that the crowd couldnā€™t see him.ā€

After scrutinizing and reviewing the duet onĀ Youtube, Wilson said Presleyā€™s image was most likely lifted from a previous taping, digitally remastered and inserted next to Dion. Also, he pointed out that Presley appears more ā€œrealā€ in some camera angles than others. Most likely, Presleyā€™s image was taken from a 1968 comeback special on NBC. He sangĀ ā€œIf I Can Dreamā€ in the same white suit.

Wilson estimated such a job would run between $50,000 (U.S.) to $100,000. He further said,

ā€œThatā€™s good quality, that probably would have had quite a lot of money spent on it.ā€

Moreover, to make it look more realistic, Dion sang with a Las Vegas Elvis tribute artist whose body was shown in wide shots.Ā At times, his face was replaced with the real Elvis taken from the 1968 Elvis Comeback special. They even used some full body shots from that special. Web chatter says Celine Dion sang the song five times and that it was all edited together to create the performance you saw.

Lyric

šŸŽµ Let’s sing along with the lyrics! šŸŽ¤

There must be lights burning brighter somewhere
Got to be birds flying higher in a sky more blue
If I can dream of a better land
Where all my brothers walk hand in hand
Tell me why, oh why, oh why can’t my dream come true

There must be peace and understanding sometime
Strong winds of promise that will blow away
All the doubt and fear
If I can dream of a warmer sun
Where hope keeps shining on everyone
Tell me why, oh why, oh why won’t that sun appear

We’re lost in a cloud
With too much rain
We’re trapped in a world
That’s troubled with pain
But as long as a man
Has the strength to dream
He can redeem his soul and fly

Deep in my heart there’s a trembling question
Still I am sure that the answer gonna come somehow
Out there in the dark, there’s a beckoning candle
And while I can think, while I can talk
While I can stand, while I can walk
While I can dream, please let my dream
Come true, right now
Let it come true right now
Oh yeah

  1. Should have never put Celine Dion with Elvis. Elvis is such a much more powerful singer. No one can come close to singing with him. And no one will ever be as good as Elvis
