About The Song

Sometimes we don’t know what we’ve got until it’s gone. The song was written by  the Philadelphia songwriting and record production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Lou Rawls released it on his 1976 album All Things in Time and as a single backed with “Let’s Fall in Love All Over Again.” It was a breakthrough hit for him. In 1976, it went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. It was #2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and in Canada. It was #10 in the U.K. and #22 in Australia. The single sold more than one million copies and earned in RIAA gold record. The record also featured MFSB, that is, “Mother Father Sister Brother” session musicians from Philadelphia’s Sigma Sound Studios. They were assembled by Gamble and Huff.
